Mwezi Boutique Resort has created a unique home from home experience for guests during their stay in Zanzibar with 16 bungalows. Each bungalow features architecture inspired by the moon (mwezi = moon in Swahili) and unique exterior and interior styles. There is an option for everyone – families with small kids, couples seeking a romantic getaway on their honeymoon or a retreat with friends, there is accommodation to suit all.
Built with an ecological and sustainable philosophy, Mwezi has incorporated local and natural materials in their buildings where possible, and employed a local construction force to complete the resort. The outside plaster, used to create a unique “Earthy” finish, consists of a high quality natural lime and river sand, resulting in a product that produces a great aesthetic and an individual finish that is uncommon throughout Zanzibar.
Each of Mwezi’s houses are unique to one another and are decorated in an individual way. The accessories and pieces of furniture, such as the comfortable king size bed and lamps, have all been designed by the owners and a partner, Italian designer Sandro Gurioli, in an intensive and creative workshop in collaboration with the local community.
As you navigate your way around each house, you will see vibrant works of art that decorate the rooms, hangers recycled from cardboard and wardrobes made from reclaimed wood. The interior decor you will find inside is not common to the marketplace and is unique to Mwezi. With a boutique shop on site, these paintings – created by young African artists, can be purchased along with many other hand crafted and locally made products.
Mwezi is located on the outskirts of the fisherman’s village of Jambiani, which makes it perfectly located for guests to explore the village on foot and retreat back to its tropical and secluded grounds – a peaceful and tranquil environment for maximum relaxation after exploring the island.
Swahili culture is introduced to its guests each Wednesday with a popular Swahili Night BBQ with live music.
As a beach front resort facing east, Mwezi’s guests have direct access to Jambiani beach, a top Zanzibar beach, and make it an excellent location to experience incredible sunrises and moon rises (if you come at the right time of month). Furthermore, guests can take advantage of its location to take regular swims in the ocean, partake in water sports and explore the coast line between Jambiani and Paje. And, if you wish to simply take it easy, Mwezi’s pool, beach bar, plentiful shade and lush grounds provide an excellent place to relax, keep cool and dine throughout the day.
